As a partner of the Fuller Center, we are excited to join in the work they have done to provide housing.

Our focus is on providing assistance to displaced families who have settled in the Blacksburg community.

Partnership

The vision for this project is a vision of partnership! We focus on fostering relationships in the Blacksburg community to create opportunities for cooperation between people from various religious, economic, and social backgrounds. Central to our organization is our relationship with The Fuller Center for Housing which connects us to housing providers around the world.

Housing

Our primary goal is to create a pathway to home ownership for displaced families who have settled in the Blacksburg community.

Sequoia

A full-grown sequoia is one of nature’s most awe-inspiring scenes. A person who plants a sequoia could never hope to experience the vastness of a 3,000-year-old tree. Therefore, to be a planter is to be committed to the creation of a future that others will experience and enjoy. Similarly, we are committed to a future that we may never live to see, a future where housing insecurity is erased from our community. Along the way, we will celebrate the successes we are able to help create and take joy in a future we are shaping.

Goals

1) To raise a minimum of $350,000 per year in annual giving.

2) To develop a diverse group of volunteers committed to a common vision.

3) To assist one family each year in the purchase of a home.

4) To support the Fuller Center for Housing.

Next Steps

1) Start fundraising!

2) Create a Family Selection Committee:
     a. Create and publish family selection criteria.
     b. Create and publish an application.

Be sure to contact us if you are interested in getting involved!

How it will work

Through our family selection process, we will partner with displaced families that have planted roots in the Blacksburg community. We will work with the family to find a home to buy outright with money raised through donations. The home will then be sold to the selected family without requiring a down payment or interest. This will allow us to customize payments in a flexible manner that accommodates financial and budgetary constraints.

As families make payments on their home their payments will be used to help fund the purchase of the next home for the next family. Over time, repayments combined with continued annual giving will allow us to purchase additional homes. Eventually, the payments collected from families that we partner with will be sufficient to continue funding home purchases without the need for additional giving.

Our Principles

The Principles that drive everything we do

Ends and Means

Along with the thinkers and activists before us, we understand that the means are the ends in the process of becoming.

Abundance

We believe that ours is an abundant world marred by scarcity not a world of lack and loss where there are glimpses of abundance.

Human Dignity

Honoring and respecting the dignity of every member of our community, especially those who find themselves in need.

Relationship

Using our partnership to build relationships in our community across lines that typically divide.

Teamwork

Accepting help from all who share a vision for providing housing to displaced families in our community.

Transparency

Maintaining a public-facing accounting system that can provide privacy for donors while ensuring transparency in our finances.
